The Big Lebowski

The Coen brothers version of happy hour. As far as I'm concerned, most of their films are about nothing, but The Big Lebowski is advertised as being about nothing. It's a semi surreal glide through the life of slackers and weirdos who mix with "bad" weirdos influenced by money and tolitarian regimes. The plot, at the nults and bolts level, is about happy-go-lucky losers who get in over their head and go on an adventure that entangles wildness and fun. That description relates The Big Lebowski to just about every comedy ever made. The modern aspect of The Big Lebowski is the severity of the content level. It lives on for most swears in a movie and other strange firsts, but this movie is no wittier or insightful than any other drug movie about druggies. The Coen Brothers add a few sequences to make the film look stylistic, but the movie just isn't very funny. It relates to absolutely nothing and has characters that better exist for just dumb laughs and obscure references. You either love this movie or you don't. Since most of the movie is based on a dry dumb humor, it just wasn't my cup of tea. But the point is that the movie does nothing to really separate itself. It's as much filler to the genre of bad comedies as any other. Since it's not my style, it's my annoyance. The over exuberant love for this movie makes it look even worst. Most bad comedies are appreciated in embarassment and a little shame. The Big Lebowski is as acclaimed as many excellent, sincere works. Sometimes a few nods to style really does mask a lot of awfulness.
